Electronic Message System
-------------------------
General
-------
The message system is used to communicate with the other users of this
bulletin board system. It provides for various ways of entering messages
to other users as well as many ways to read messages posted by other users.
A 'message' is simply a bundle of text that has the basic qualities:
1) 'from-user': The person who wrote the message
2) 'To-user: The person to whom the message is addressed.
(or 'ALL' for all users)
3) 'subject': A one-line 40-character summary of what the message
is about.
4) 'Date': The date and time the message was written is
recorded.
5) 'Number': All messages are stamped with a number to provide
for easy managability of the bbs software as well
as allow users to keep track of them.
6) 'Privacy': Messages may be set as 'private' to allow only the
person addressed by the from-user field to read the
message. Non-private messages may be read by
anyone. NOTE: The system operater has access to
all messages both public and private.
7) 'Text': The actual "guts" of the message - various text
that the author types in to say what he wants.
Messages are entered in 'areas'. Most bbs systems have many areas
which pertain to different subjects. Usually, the message is entered in one
area and remains there. Messages in one area can not normally be read in
another area. Areas are simply a means of categorizing the message as to
what it's subject/content is about.
Commands
--------
[A] AREA CHANGE
With the Mach-10 software, many 'Message Areas' may be set up. Each
area contains a different set of messages, usually pertaining to a
specific topic. The [A] command allows you to select which area you
wish to be in. The area will be selected for the READ, ENTER, SCAN,
and PACK commands and will remain in effect until you either change to
a different area and/or enter a different sub-board.
[C] CHECK MAIL
This command will do a complete scan of all ACTIVE message bases and
report any messages that have been written to YOU that you have not
received. It will not scan ignored (see below) message areas or
areas of which you do not have access to. All messages found will
be marked so that you may later read them with the [M] command
described below.
[D] DOWNLOAD PACK MAIL
As an option of the Mach-10 software, you may download 'packaged'
mail to your terminal which you may later read on your terminal
at your convenience. The method(s) for packaging this mail are described
below in the [P] (pack area) command.
The [D] command allows you to 'download' the mail. You may either
download it as archived (usually IBM and compatibles only) or plain
ASCII format. In order to download the mail, you must have PACKAGED
it previously (see the below [P] option).
[E] ENTER MESSAGE
This command will allow you to enter a public or private message to
another user or to 'ALL'. The message will be posted in the current
message area.
Upon entering [E], you will be prompted for the name of the user
you wish to send it to (or 'ALL' for all users), a small forty
character subject/summary of the message, and whether you wish it to
be private or not.
[F] FILES SYSTEM
The files system menu is used to sending/receiving files with this
bbs. It is described in detail in it's own help file.
[G] GOODBYE
The [G] option will log you off of the system. You will be prompted
to make sure you wish to log off at this time.
[H] HELP
The [H] option will display the message that you are reading now.
[I] EDIT IGNORES
Mach-10 has the capability to 'ignore' certain message areas durring
the message-check (option [C] above) in order to speed things up.
Ignored areas are NOT checked to see if you have any mail waiting so
you should ignore only areas that you do not frequently use.
National Echo-Mail areas are automatically ignored for you at log-on
time due to their size. If you wish the message-check function to scan
a national echo, you MUST tell it to do so.
[J] UTILITIES MENU
The [J] command will bring you to the utilities menu where you may
execute various utility functions such as setting your graphics
preference, viewing your user profile, etc. Please see the help file in
the utilities section for more information.
[K] ERASE PACK FILE
If you decide that you wish to ERASE your packaged mail file, this
option will delete it. It is useful in case you have packaged up a
large area and wish to get rid of it.
[L] SET READ-LOCKS
If you wish, you may set certain criteria that the [R] read command
will use to select the messages that you read. You may "lock" the read
command so that it only displays messages of a specific subject, or only
displays messages to/from you. IMPORTANT: All "locks" will remain active
until turned off!
[M] READ MARKED MAIL
The [R] option will allow you to read messages specifically MARKED
by either yourself (manually) throught the READ or SCAN commands or
automatically marked messages from the check-message command.
All mail that is detected by the [C] Check message command (above)
is marked and may be read by using this command. This is simply a
service to allow you to read all messages addressed to yourself
at one time.
You may also MANUALLY mark messages to be used by this command in
two ways:
1) By typing 'M' at the READ-MESSAGE submenu while you are reading
messages. The 'M' will cause the current message that you are
reading to be marked.
2) By selecting 'mark for later retrieval' when you execute the
[S] Scan (described below) command. All messages that are
found with the scan command will be marked.
[N] LIST NEW MESSAGES
The [N] command will compare your 'lastread' pointer to the number
of messages in all non-ignored areas. The result is that a tally of
the number of messages that you have NOT read is reported in each
area. These messages are not necessarily to YOU, but just new
messages in the area. This command is useful to determine which
areas have had activity since your last looked in them.
[P] PACK AN AREA
Since some areas (particularly echo-areas) contain an extremely
large number of messages, it may be sometimes easier to 'download'
the messages to your system and examine them at your own convenience
OFF-LINE rather than using your bbs time to view them.
The [P] option will pack up the messages in the current area and
store them in your PACKMAIL file which you may later download with the
'D' command above.
[Q] QUIT TO MAIN MENU
This command will exit the message system and bring you back to the
main menu. Further information on the main menu is available in its own
help file.
[R] READ MESSAGES
The [R] command is used to read messages in the current area. While
reading, you may go to the next or previous message as well as REPLY
to the current message that you are reading. The read command presents
you with a sub-menu of the following choices:
NEXT: Advance to the next message (if any) in the current
area.
PREV: Advance to the previous message (if any) in the
current area.
REPLY: Enter a message in reply to the current message that
you are reading. The name of the author of the current
message will automatically be placed in the 'TO'
field of your message as well as the subject of the
original message. See the above [E] command for more
information.
CAPT: Capture the current message into your PACKMAIL file
for later downloading. See the above command [P] for
more information
MARK: Mark the message to be used later with the [M]
command. See the above [M] command for more infor-
mation.
+ (optional): If the current message has any REPLIES, this command
will advance to the next reply to the message.
- (optional): If the current message is a reply, tis command will
go to the original message.
QUIT: Exit back to the message menu.
#: By typing in the number of a message, you may procede
directly to that message.
[S] SCAN CURRENT AREA
The [S] command allows you to scan the current area for a specific
subject and/or messages addressed to or from you. The messages will
be listed in a table showing the number, date, author, and subject of
each message.
The messages found by the [S] command may be marked for later
retrieval with the [M] command. See the [M] command for more information
on marking messages.
[X] EXPERT MODE
The [X] option will turn off the displays of menus so that you may
move through the system more quickly. You may turn the menus back on
by typing [X] again or display the current menu by typing [?].
[Z] CLEAR MARKED STATUS
The [Z] option clears any messages that have been marked of the
marked status. For more information see the [M] option above.
[?] DISPLAY MENU
This will display the current menu if you have EXPERT mode enabled.
